OUR STEAM ENGINES

JOFFRE
Joffre was built by Kerr-Stuart in 1915, works no.2405. It is an 0-6-0 tank + well tank, one of 70 made under licence from Deauville for the French Government Artillery Railways.
Five were later purchased by a quarry at Rinxent, near Calais. The Railway acquired one of the locomotives, and restored it to operation in 2012.
After a decade of service the loco is now awaiting some remedial work.
MONTALBAN
Montalban, an 0-4-0 tank+well tank, was built in 1913 by Orenstein & Koppel of Germany, works no. 6641. It worked in the Minas de Utrillas in Zaragoza, Spain.
After the mine closed, the engine was discovered lying derelict in a small roundhouse, with several other locos.
It arrived at the Railway in 1984, and has been fully rebuilt, with a new boiler made locally in Preston to our design.

IRISH MAIL
Irish Mail is an 0-4-0 saddle tank, built by the Hunslet Engine Co. of Leeds in 1903, works no.823. It worked at the Dinorwic slate quarries in North Wales.
It was brought down to the quarry workshop in the 1950s, and dismantled down to the frames. It remained in the yard until the quarry closed in 1969.
The Railway purchased Irish Mail and restored it over a ten-year period, with the loco entering service in 1981.
SYBIL
Sybil is an 0-4-0 saddle tank built in 1906 by W G Bagnall of Stafford, works no.1706. The loco worked at the Dinorwic slate quarries in North Wales for more than 50 years. After the quarry closed, Sybil was sold and moved to Cornwall.
In 2013 the loco was bought by the newly-formed Sybil Locomotive Trust, with the aim of restoring her to working order and operating her at West Lancs.
Restoration is now complete.
